Keeping Active
Kids and adults with CF don’t always have to refrain from participating in activities. Remember that before starting an exercise or athletic regimen, you should consult with your doctor about what may be appropriate. People with CF should be encouraged to participate as long as their doctor supports the decision.
If you have kids with CF that are in school, they probably have access to physical education classes, or sports teams after school. Encourage your child to participate at the activity level their doctor recommends.
If you are an adult living with CF, talk to your doctor about the appropriate level of exercise for you. Then, look for an activity you enjoy. There may be adult sports teams in your community, or classes at a local gym.
Here are some ideas to keep your young kids active:
Shadow Dancer:
Take your toddler outside on a sunny day. Ask them to stand still while you trace their shadow. Repeat this for several different positions. Then ask your toddler to try to fit their shadow into the tracings again.
Treasure Hunt:
Spray paint rocks in bright colors and hide them in your house or yard. Teach your toddler to “hunt for treasure” and collect all the rocks.
Ball Toss:
Put a box or laundry basket on the floor. Give your toddler several soft balls and see how many they can toss into the basket. With each successful toss, have your toddler take one step back and see how far they can get.
Work with your CF Care Team and learn signs to look for that may mean it’s time to take a break from the action. Knowing the appropriate level of exercise and activity for you or your child is an important part of getting the right amount.
