Pressures

Parts of your life are probably changing right now. As you get older you’ll make more decisions that affect your health. Other kids at school might start smoking tobacco, drinking or doing drugs. These decisions aren’t healthy for anybody, but they can be even worse if you have CF. That’s because smoking, or being around people that are smoking, can hurt your lungs. Also, alcohol and other drugs can interact with some medications you might be taking. It can be hard to say “no” to your peers. Talk to your parents or someone you trust if you feel pressured.

Here are some examples:

  • Say “no thanks,” and stick to it

  • Tell them why – Sports performance, getting in trouble with your parents, or your CF are all good reasons to skip smoking, drinking or doing drugs. And remember, you can have fun and feel good without drugs or alcohol

  • Walk away if you can

  • Have a different plan – You can suggest something more fun, like going to a movie or a game
