Keep Up With School
You’ve probably been going to school and juggling CF for years. And you can find out if there are ways your school can help. But if you’re struggling, there may be some extra things that can be done.
You and your parents can speak to your school and your teachers about any help you may need. Letting your teacher know in advance about CF may help you get the extra support you need.
You may be able to:
Take medications without school nurse supervision
Go to the restroom without having to ask permission
Eat a snack in class
Get tutored and have homework mailed home during extended absences
Sit away from students who might be sick
Individual Education Plan
If you are in a public school, you may get an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Or, you may have a 504 plan. If you are in a private school that does not receive federal funding, they do not have to give you an IEP or a 504 plan. Because of that, you might want to create some sort of signed agreement with school officials. If you and the school cannot agree about the needed changes, or if you need help figuring out how to get started, you can contact the CF Legal Hotline.
When making a plan for dealing with CF and school, talk to your parents and your CF Care Team.
Make sure you have a plan for school if you have to spend time at the hospital. It’s important to review your plans each year and make sure they are up-to-date.
